Stylish Garden Doghouses

You may want to add a cool and stylish, or eco-friendly and green doghouse to your dog-friendly yard. We’re not keen on keeping dogs outside for prolonged unsupervised periods. But a doghouse can be a nice place for an outdoor nap, or a comfy spot to get out of the sun or rain. Remember your dog is happiest when they have company and they are part of your family pack …

There are so many styles available from the basic, traditional models to luxurious, over-the-top retreats. A new trend in doghouses is earth friendly types made from recycled materials such as wooden pallets … with some incorporating “living rooftops” planted with greens, flowers or succulents!

Some folks like to go with a doghouse that’s a miniature version of their residence, or add a bit of whimsy and humor to the yard with a novelty one …

What Size Doghouse?

The “standard” answer to this question is that a dog house should be large enough to allow the dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably inside the house. To determine dog house size, your dog’s weight is a good starting point. However, if your breed is between sizes or your dog’s weight doesn’t accurately reflect his or her body size, it’s best to measure your dog …

Here’s Some Basic Tips:

1. The height of the door should be at least three fourths (3/4) of the dog’s shoulder to ground measurement. The door height does not need to be as tall as the dog or larger either. The dog will lower its head when entering the dog house.

2. The next measurement is from the dog’s nose to its flank. The house should be no shorter or no more than 30% longer than this measurement.

3. The last measurement should be the height of the dog from the top of its head straight down to the ground. Keep its head high and flat. The house should be no more than 45% taller than this height.

Should I Choose A Wood or Plastic Doghouse?

A basic decision to be made up front is whether to go with a wood or plastic doghouse (the two most common materials). First, let’s explore plastic models. Doghouses made from plastic are usually less expensive and lighter than wooden ones. They’re easier to transport, don’t splinter, don’t rot out, and don’t require refinishing periodically. They are also easy to clean and don’t have pockets for pesky insects to build nests …

Doghouses made from wood tend to be more substantial than plastic ones. They offer more design possibilities, creativity, and they will provide your dog better protection against the elements …

Wood is a much better insulator than plastic so your dog is less likely to overheat inside a wood house. Many people prefer the natural and classier look of wood to plastic …

It’s your choice…they both have their advantages and disadvantages. Do your research and don’t rush into a decision. Make sure your dog gives the new abode a paw’s up by placing a comfy mat inside.
